FAYETTE COUNTY, Pa. — Workers were devastated last month when they walked into Fayette County’s food bank and saw the destruction caused by flooding. The water caused nearly $500,000 worth of damage, but the organization is pushing forward, rebuilding one canned good at a time.
Almost six weeks after flood water rushed through their door, the Fayette County food bank is back up and running, but still in need of food donations and money.
CEO Jim Stark said volunteers helped clean up the mess after mud coated every surface and destroyed almost the entire food supply, freezers and vehicles.
“Unfortunately, we lost three vehicles, two refrigerated trucks and a pickup truck,” Stark said.
After weeks of clean up, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture last week gave the food bank the go ahead to start operating again.
“We appreciate the support and help we have received from the local community, businesses, families (for) both donating product and financial donations (that have) been so helpful,” Stark said.
Any further donations can be dropped off at the North Beeson location, or at the Fayette County Fair next Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
