Ford system detects potholes, skims right over them

The Ford Motor Company is touting its new pothole protection system.

The company says the shock absorber system automatically stiffens when sensors scanning the road detect a pothole, reacting in milliseconds.

That allows the system to keep the wheel elevated instead of dropping into the hole.  Ping pong balls were placed in a pothole to show how the stiffened suspension keeps the wheels up as they pass over potholes.

Some luxury cars have similar technology, but Ford says the 2017 Fusion is first mid-sized car in its price range that has offered the feature.
