UNIONTOWN, Pa.,None — State constables said they found a fugitive drunken driving suspect, his wife, two children and several pets staying in a shuttered animal shelter in North Union Township.
Constables said they found Richard Allen Huey, 37, on Wednesday at the defunct Steve Courson Humane Society shelter. The constables said Huey slipped out a rear door as they arrived and remains at large.
The constables said Huey's wife, the couple's 8-month-old baby and another child they were baby sitting were in the shelter with five dogs and several cats.
Pasquale said the couple had converted the shelter's office area into a makeshift apartment. But he said the animals were free to run throughout the building, which was littered with garbage, debris and animal feces.
"There were numerous dogs running around, five or six dogs…, scattered with animal feces, cats, urine all over the floor, garbage strewn everywhere, bugs, flies," said Pasquale. "They used the bathtub where the dogs used to be bathed at [to bath themselves].
Officers said they have no idea where they kept food or why they though the old shelter was an appropriate place to live.
"The conditions wouldn't be fit for animals, let alone for human habitation," Pasquale said.
While Huey remains on the run, his former home has been condemned and his child is in the custody of Child and Youth Services.
"We go into a lot of places and see a lot of different conditions," said Constable Phil Michael. "This was one of the most severe conditions. We were very worried about the children."
Huey has faced animal cruelty charges in the past. He is now wanted for driving under the influence and other summary offenses.
