Gun Found In Burgettstown Student's Locker

BURGETTSTOWN, Pa.,None — A Burgettstown Area Middle/High School student has been suspended after a gun was confiscated from his locker on Monday.

Superintendent Deborah Jackson said a teacher saw something suspicious in the student's locker on Monday and reported it to the principal. The principal searched the locker and found a handgun, as well as 50 rounds of ammunition.

The name of the student has not been released.

Jackson said the student used the weapon for target practice with a relative and forgot the gun was in his bag.

People who have children in the school said its a safe district.

"As far as the school district is concerned I have all the confidence in the world. I have my grandkids involved in sports. They play football for the district, they play basketball. It's not the district it's just a few individuals that highlight the bad segment of this community. That's just the way it is," said George Niedzialkia of Burgettstown.

Smith Township police are investigating. The student has been suspended pending a hearing with the Board of Education.
