DAYTON, Ohio — An Ohio couple is facing charges after their dog accidentally ingested heroin and had to be given Naloxone to survive.

When a veterinarian arrived at the couple’s Dayton home, the pit bull, named Diesel, was in bad shape. The veterinarian administered Naloxone, which is the same medication used to block opiate effects in humans.

“There's not a lot of data out there on heroin exposure to dogs, so we'll be watching him closely," said Mark Kumpf, director of the Montgomery County Animal Control Center.

Diesel’s owners are charged with cruelty to animals.

Police said their investigation showed this wasn’t the first time the puppy was exposed to heroin.
