GREENSBURG, Pa.,None — A Greensburg-area man accused of killing his wife's lover last month will head to trial on homicide charges.
Police said Richard McAnulty walked into a southwest Greensburg home on July 11 and shot Harry Mears, before turning himself in to authorities.
According to witnesses, McAnulty drove his pickup truck to a house along Oakland Avenue, then got out and kicked down the door before firing shots at Mears, 39, while chasing him through the house.
Mears, a witness said, tried to escape by jumping out of an upstairs window and onto the ground. Neighbors rushed over to help him, but he died from his injuries at a local hospital.
The district attorney handled the case for the prosecution at McAnulty's preliminary hearing on Thursday.
Kimberly Gray, the in-home caregiver for McAnulty's elderly mother, testified on Thursday. She was at the suspect's home on the day of the slaying and said Mcanulty and his wife had an argument earlier that day over some e-mails.
Gray said that's when McAnulty grabbed his rifle and stormed out of the house. She said she tried to stop him, but he said, "There's a job that needs to be done."
Gray said McAnulty then called a few hours later and said, "I did it. I killed him."
Gray said McAnulty told her he picked up a hitchhiker and the two of them found Mears's address. Before shooting Mears, McAnulty told him, "You'll never sleep with another man's wife," Gray said.
"There's a lot of undisputed facts that will be coming out later that iI believe will show fairly clearly there is some question about McAnulty's reasoning and his state of mind that evening," said McAnulty's attorney, Timothy Andrews.
Police said Mears met McAnulty's wife online. They said they still are trying to work out the details of their relationship.
"There was a connection between the wife and Mr. Mears, we don't have all the details, all we know is that there was a relationship," said Kent. "How long it lasted or whether it was ongoing we don't know at this time."
