John McCaw bought the piece of rock and roll history at a local music shop for just $175 in about 1967. The acoustic guitar was originally purchased by Lennon in London in 1962. It matched another guitar that George Harrison purchased at the same time. He performed with the Beatles on it until it disappeared in December of 1963, presumably stolen.
McCaw, a building contractor by trade, played on it unknowingly for almost 45 years. When he saw a picture of Harrison's guitar in an issue of Guitar Aficionado magazine in 2012, it began to dawn on him that his guitar could be something special. He reached out to international experts to authenticate it. Lennon had played the guitar roughly, leaving deep marks and scratches which made the positive identification easier. Aside from those marks, the guitar is in immaculate condition thanks to McCaw's great care.
After being authenticated, the guitar went on display in the Grammy Museum's Hall of Fame in Los Angeles. Private collectors are being invited to bid on it in at a private auction house sale this November. Experts are predicting the it will sell for between six and hundred thousand dollars.
