Lawrenceville Home Infested With Cats; Neighbors Complain

PITTSBURGH,None — Neighbors are concerned about a house in Lawrenceville.

They said the smell coming from it is horrible and they want the problem fixed.

One of the police officers who went inside the home described what he saw.

"We got permission to go into the house and the first twelve feet inside the doorway, both front and back doors, were covered with cat feces," said Sgt. James Vogel.

He also saw about 30 cats living in the house and trash piled up inside the address in the 5300 block of Holmes Street.

Neighbors said this has been an ongoing problem for years.

Holly Augustinowicz said, "We pour bleach out here, 409, Pinesol, you name it. We do whatever we have to do to keep the smell away.

One neighbor told Channel 11, "It smells in my house from cats and I don't even have a cat."

The owner of the home, Michael Cain, said he is in the process of cleaning it up to sell it.

Cain claims only a few cats remain inside.

Saturday morning, Sgt. Vogel said Animal Control took a cat out of Cain's truck which was parked outside.

Neighbors said Cain has been sleeping in his truck at night with some of the cats and his three-year-old daughter.

Those who live by have been calling authorities to complain about the address for years.

Sgt. Vogel said all of the necessary paperwork is finished and referrals have been made to C.Y.F., Building Inspection, Animal Control, Re-Solve, Police Narcotics/Vice Squad, and Fire Prevention.

The address contains potential violations for every one of the above departments to investigate.

"I saw probably about 30 cats myself. Behind one door I opened, there was a cat that obviously had a litter of kittens," said Vogel.

No criminal charges have been filed against Cain at this time.
