Lawsuit Filed Over "Tainted" Milk

PITTSBURGH,None — The lawsuit was filed against Brunton Dairy, which was in the news over the summer after more than a dozen customers got sick from bacteria in tainted milk.

The man who is suing was a regular customer, who got milk from Brunton Dairy delivered to his house. In July, Joseph Wakeling, Jr. got very sick and he wasn't the only one.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health began investigating and they found a type of bacteria in the milk, known as Yersinia Enterocolitica, which can cause severe stomach problems.

According to the lawsuit, Wakeling was hospitalized and suffered from kidney damage. He now has to have dialysis three times a week. He is suing for $25,000.

Brunton Dairy shut down production twice over the summer after pasteurized milk in glass bottles tested positive for the bacteria. Although tests at the farm came back negative, so investigators were never able to pinpoint the problem's origin.

The dairy is a family-run business, now operated by the seventh generation of Bruntons. When I called, they said they had "no comment" about the lawsuit.
