PITTSBURGH — One person was killed in a crash early Monday morning in Pittsburgh’s Hays neighborhood.
The crash happened about 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Mifflin and Lebanon roads.
Investigators said the driver was traveling down Mifflin Road when he lost control, hit a pole and landed in a creek.
"Witnesses said he was trying to stop suddenly for something, maybe a deer, so we will be looking at the car for any evidence of deer or anything like that," said Pittsburgh police Sgt. Dan Connolly.
Police said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Investigators said speed may have been a contributing factor in the deadly crash.
"The speed limit is 25. You have this bend. We see a lot of roadside memorials, several fatals here. But if you do the speed limit the road is as safe as any other road," Connolly said.
Police said they have not ruled out the possibility that the driver suffered a medical emergency before the crash.
"The medical examiner will do an autopsy and determine the cause of death and make sure there were not mechanical failures with the vehicle," said Connolly.
Mifflin Road was closed for over three hours while police investigated. The road has since reopened.
The victim’s name has not been released.
