PITTSBURGH — Police said an 18-year-old shot several times at a Crafton Heights housing project Thursday night was later found lying on a sidewalk.

Investigators said the man was shot at a home on Woodlow Street around 10:30 p.m. and was running for help when he collapsed at the intersection of Steuben and Woodlow streets.

Officers said a witness tried helping the man by applying pressure to his bullet wounds on the right side of his body.

"We were all in the house. I heard eight to 10 shots let off and I instantly grabbed my daughter and waited for police," one woman said.

People who live nearby said they heard the gunfire.

Chris Phillips works at the housing complex and said violence has been on the rise.

"It's been getting crazy up here lately," Phillips said. "There's a lot of little kids here. I'm just glad no one was out at the time when this happened."

The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital where he's listed in critical but stable condition.
