BETHEL PARK, Pa. — UPDATE: The soft lockdown at Bethel Park High School has been lifted.

Independence Middle School is now on a soft lockdown instead of a full lockdown.

Authorities continue to investigate.

Initial coverage:

Two schools within the Bethel Park School District are on lockdown following a Safe to Say tip about a possible weapon.

Independence Middle School is on full lockdown as police investigate the anonymous tip, which claimed a student may have brought a weapon to school.

“We are working with authorities to identify the source of the tip and determine its credibility,” the district said in a statement.

Bethel Park High School is on a soft lockdown out of an abundance of caution due to the ongoing situation at the middle school. In a soft lockdown, no one may enter or exit the building, but internal operations continue as normal.

District officials ask that everyone please stay away from both schools and do not call.

The district ended the statement with: “The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. We ask families to refrain from calling or coming to either school so that authorities can work without interruption. We will provide an update as soon as information is available. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.”
