Despite their efforts, the smoke and flames were too intense and consumed the home on Prospect Street.

“My brother-in-law came running in asking if I had any fire extinguishers. I asked, ‘Why?’ He said the house was on fire. I had three fire extinguishers. He already used one of his,” said Todd Miller.

Miller told Channel 11 that his niece was able to get most of the family pets to safety. “They were getting the dogs out of the house, my brother-in-law’s daughter was, and a ferret, but it was too smoky,” he said.

His niece was able to rescue all five dogs and a few of the family’s ferrets.

Miller said it was mere chance that his family members noticed the fire just after leaving the home.

“They went down to the gas station, came back, looked up and saw a glow is what they told me,” he said.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

Channel 11 learned the victims plan to stay with family.
