PITTSBURGH — Crews worked to fix seven water main breaks around the Pittsburgh area Thursday morning.
Officials said a 12-inch line broke in front of a post office on Chartiers Avenue in McKees Rocks around 5:30 a.m.
Firefighters had to close the busy stretch of road down while water workers dug up the road to repair the line.
"The whole thing was filled, buckled over. It was running down the side, probably 4 inches rushing," said McKees Rocks firefighters Chase Maritz.
Another break was reported Thursday morning in Stowe Township. Officials said a 6-inch line broke affecting 20 homes.
"I'd rather be without water than power because it's hot outside," said resident Rachille Coleman.
Channel 11's Lori Houy reported that breaks were also reported in Ross Township and Ben Avon Heights.
West View Water Authority officials said the heat is likely playing a part, because the ground expands and contracts in extreme weather conditions.
"You would think in the winter time, when it's colder, they break more. But apparently that's not true," Maritz said.
