9 people, including 2 children, dead after shooting in Erie

ERIE, Pa. — Nine people are dead after a shooting in Erie.

According to Channel 11 affiliate Erie News NOW, the incident started at a home on the 700 block of Perry Street at around 5 p.m. on Friday.

Reports say a man was firing a handgun outside the house before entering. SWAT units were called and a standoff ensued. Police heard gunshots inside the house during the standoff. Eventually, they were able to gain entrance.

Erie News Now said police found several victims, including the children, inside the home. Two women were found dead in the street.

The City of Erie Government shared a post saying the shooter is dead and that there is no active threat or danger to the public.

Erie News Now said the shooter appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In part, the statement from the City of Erie Government said:

“We understand that this news brings deep shock and sorrow to our residents, and we want to assure the public that the situation has been contained...

“Our thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and everyone impacted by tonight’s tragedy. We will continue working closely with our Erie Police Dept. and will provide updates as soon as verified information becomes available.”
