PITTSBURGH — An abandoned mine shaft left a massive hole in a Pittsburgh area street, leaving nearby residents worried about the stability of their homes.
Pittsburgh Public Works crews were at the scene on Stanton Avenue Monday morning filling the hole left behind -- that was estimated to be about 20 feet deep.
Crews used a backhoe to dig through the asphalt and expose the shaft, then filled the hole with several truck loads of reclaimed asphalt.
A man who rents a home nearby said he's afraid the work will cause his carport to shift and possibly slide down a nearby hill.
Public Works director Rob Kaczorowski said the Bureau of Mining has been contacted to further investigate.
