ALIQUIPPA, Pa. — The City of Aliquippa Police Department has issued a public alert following a security incident involving an email account belonging to Chief Lane.
Department officials confirmed that the account was compromised and that the chief did not personally send the fraudulent messages.
The department stated that it is receiving a high volume of telephone calls regarding the emails. Officials asked residents to refrain from calling the station solely to confirm whether an email from the chief’s address is legitimate.
The City of Aliquippa Police Department advised anyone who receives one of the messages to avoid taking action on the content.
“If you received one of these emails, please do not respond, click on any links, open any attachments, or provide any personal or financial information,” the department said in a statement.
Department officials confirmed that unauthorized access led to the distribution of the fraudulent messages.
“The email account has been hacked and the individual did NOT send these emails,” the department said.
Law enforcement personnel are working to resolve the situation and secure the compromised account.
“There is no need to contact the Police Department simply to verify whether the email is legitimate,” the department said. “We are aware of the issue and are actively addressing it.”
