The Allegheny County Airport is celebrating its 95th anniversary!
Friday, local leaders commemorated the airport’s service with a celebration.
The airport was built in 1931 as a major commercial hub. It now accommodates aviation students, medical transport and private business flights.
One of the first lighted and hard-surface airports in the country, the Allegheny County Airport counts aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt among its visitors over the years.
“It’s a great place for families. It’s also a great place for students who are learning to either be aircraft mechanics or pilots,” Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said. “And it just got a really diverse set of mandates of what it does for this community, and it’s really important.”
