Allegheny County has implemented a policy banning balloons in all nine county parks, effective immediately.
The prohibition applies to helium-filled, latex and water balloons, as well as sky lanterns. Under the new rules, balloons are banned from decorative or prop use at park shelters, wedding venues, park facilities and all events hosted within the parks.
County officials established the policy in direct response to recurring litter and debris left behind by visitors. The discarded balloon materials require substantial annual cleanup efforts from maintenance crews and volunteers.
In addition to the maintenance burden, the county said balloon debris poses a direct physical threat to local wildlife in the parks. County officials are requesting that all visitors respect and follow the new rules.
