Allegheny County Council rejects proposal to post ‘In God We Trust' in courthouse

PITTSBURGH — On Tuesday night, Allegheny County Council members rejected a proposal to post "In God We Trust" in the county courthouse.

"I commend County Council for their vote this evening. I am pleased that Allegheny County will continue to be a community that welcomes diverse populations with different viewpoints and ways of life. This vote makes it clear that all people, regardless of their religion, ethnicity, or belief system, are welcome here," said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.

If the measure had been approved, Fitzgerald said he would have vetoed it.

Republicans Tom Baker, Heather Heidelbaugh, Ed Kress, Sue Means and Jan Rea supported the proposal. Democrat Bill Robinson also voted in favor of posting the motto, our newspaper exchange partner TribLive reported.

"In God We Trust" became the national motto in 1956.
