The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that multiple superloads will be transported through portions of Armstrong, Westmoreland and Indiana counties starting Tuesday.
Edwards Moving and Rigging of Shelbyville, Ky., will transport the loads from the Armstrong Terminal in Schenley to the Homer City Power Plant.
The initial transport operation will take place over two days on Tuesday and Wednesday. Motorists should expect traffic stoppages and travel delays, as the slow-moving load will travel between 10 and 25 mph while occupying two lanes of traffic.
On Tuesday at 9 a.m., the superload will depart from the Armstrong Terminal in Schenley and travel along Route 66 through Leechburg and Apollo to Delmont. From Delmont, the shipment will proceed on Route 22 toward Blairsville before pulling off at a local staging area to install additional equipment.
Travel is set to resume at 7 p.m. along Route 22 and Route 119. Motorists traveling west of the Indiana County line will be unable to pass the slow-moving load and will be detoured via Bairdstown Road and West Market Street to East Market Street and Old William Penn Highway.
Drivers traveling east of the Indiana County line should expect a rolling slowdown on Route 22 East while the superload crosses the Conemaugh River bridge.
On Wednesday, transport will continue at 9 a.m., moving onto Campbells Mill Road, also known as Route 3011 and Blacklick Road, designated as Route 3013, toward the Homer City Power Plant.
Personal vehicles and truck traffic will be detoured from the intersection of Route 119 and Campbells Mill Road south to Route 22 West, across Route 22 West and north on Route 217 to Blacklick Road.
The transport operation involves multiple safety entities. Pennsylvania State Police, escort vehicles and bucket trucks staged to lift overhead utility wires will accompany the load along the route.
Motorists can monitor travel conditions and delay information using the state’s 511PA service. The free system offers delay warnings, weather updates and traffic camera access online, through smartphone applications or by calling 5-1-1.
Additional travel dates are tentatively scheduled for Oct. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15 and 16. These planned shipments will follow the same two-day travel schedule, routes and detours.
PennDOT noted that travel dates and times remain subject to change due to weather or unforeseen delays. PennDOT will announce official travel schedules prior to approved transportation dates.
