NEW SEWICKLEY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A police department in Beaver County is warning residents about a scam involving counterfeit silver coins.
The New Sewickley Police Department said they have recently been notified about these coins, which are designed to resemble “2026 American Silver Eagles” and feature imitation grading labels and packaging.
Officials said the fake coins are frequently encountered during private sales, online marketplace transactions and purchases from unfamiliar sellers.
The counterfeit coins are presented in holders that appear legitimate but include fake grading labels.
Police advised buyers to verify any grading certification directly through the website of the grading company before completing a purchase.
Law enforcement officials recommended purchasing precious metals only from reputable and established dealers and to have the weight, dimensions and metal content of a coin tested if they have any doubts.
For private transactions, police suggested meeting in a safe, public location to complete the exchange.
A good rule of thumb: if the price seems too good to be true, be cautious.
Residents who believe they have purchased a counterfeit coin or have been the victim of fraud were instructed to contact their local law enforcement agency.
Police said victims should preserve all packaging, receipts and communications with the seller to assist in any potential investigation.
