BEAVER BOROUGH, Pa. — Thursday’s strong storms rocked Beaver Borough, bringing down trees and power lines all across the area.
“It was unlike any other storm I’d seen,” said Garrett Talkington, who works at Trek Bicycle.
He was out on a delivery when the storms rolled through.
“It was literally a wall of rain parallel to the ground; had to be 70-mile-an-hour winds,” he said.
Those strong winds snapped the massive tree in front of the bicycle shop. Part of it hit the building, but there was no damage.
“I think this is the prettiest corner in town; that tree here on the corner really made it that way, so I’m sad to see it gone,” Talkington said.
Just a few blocks away, crews were busy cutting up a roughly 100-year-old tree that uprooted from the ground and fell on power lines.
“We just knew it was a really bad cell that came through, and they actually said it was almost like a wind tunnel coming down Taylor Avenue here,” said Jarrod Thomas, who lives on Taylor Avenue.
Thomas lives across the street from where that tree uprooted. Luckily it didn’t hit any homes or cars, but that has happened on this street before.
Thomas said a storm 10 years ago uprooted a tree that fell onto his truck.
“We also had one that came down in front of my property here that hit into my house and did a bunch of damage, so we’ve had several instances with this over the years,” he said.
Now, as the cleanup continues, the biggest concern for many in Beaver is when the power will be back on.
According to Duquesne Light’s Outage Map, the restoration was still to be determined as of 5 p.m. Friday.
“We were told it could possibly be a couple days, hopefully that’s not the case. Hopefully it’s sooner,” Thomas said. “But they told us it could be the middle of next week. We’re hoping to get it back as soon as possible.”
