Bicyclist killed in landslide on Great Allegheny Passage identified as 79-year-old woman

CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. — The bicyclist who was killed in a landslide along the Great Allegheny Passage in Fayette County over the weekend has been identified.

Fayette County Coroner Bob Baker identified the woman as Gail Luck, 79, of Germantown, WI. Her husband, who was injured, is expected to make a full recovery.

Luck and her husband were biking along the trail when the landslide gave way.

Pennsylvania State Police troopers were sent to mile marker 87.6 on the Great Allegheny Passage on Saturday for reports of two people trapped under a rock.

In a social media post, Great Allegheny Passage officials said the landslide has closed the trail between Ohiopyle and Connellsville.

Trail users are told to avoid that section. Shuttles can be arranged using this link.

Connellsville Mayor Greg Lincoln posted this statement on social media following the incident:

“As many of you know, today a terrible accident occurred on the bike trail right outside the city. A couple, enjoying a beautiful ride on the trail, were caught in a landslide. Unfortunately, a life was lost and someone else was significantly injured. I won’t release any more information on an ongoing incident. However, the couple and their family are in the thoughts and prayers of my family and everyone in Connellsville. I would like to thank the first responders and everyone who responded to this accident to help. I ask everyone to please keep them in your thoughts and prayers too.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is investigating the incident.
