BEAVER FALLS, Pa. — The Blackhawk School District is more than $800,000 in debt, which is why the school board decided to cancel its pre-kindergarten program.
Leaders in the district said the move will save more than $100,000, but they acknowledged the district is in the midst of a financial crisis.

The program, which had served 15 children, wasn’t the only one cut. The school board also got rid of the instructional support program that helps kids with learning disabilities.
Board members have said no area is off limits when it comes to cuts, especially because the district has no idea what’s in store for next year.
The board isn’t ruling out additional cuts but did say no teachers will be furloughed.
The superintendent of the district didn’t return a request for comment Tuesday.
