PITTSBURGH — A pregnant woman died Tuesday evening after a shooting in Pittsburgh’s Brighton Heights neighborhood, according to Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Sonya Toler.

Investigators said the shooting occurred along Antrim Street near the intersections with Fleming and Richardson avenues shortly after 9 p.m.

Toler confirmed 27-year-old Deona Barnett, of the North Side, was shot multiple times and was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where she later died. She was six-weeks pregnant and the mother of five children.

“All we know for sure right now is that she was walking and that she was shot by an individual,” Toler said. “We do know that the victim was walking when the shooting occurred. Our witnesses can only say, since it was dark, that they saw a shadowy figure.”

Channel 11's news exchange partners at TribLIVE reported Barnett was shot in the pelvis.

Toler said homicide detectives believe the shooter was on foot. Detectives also said that since Barnett was walking alone, they believe she was targeted.

Neighbors told Channel 11 News they heard the gunshots, but it was Barnett’s screams that had them running into the street.

Dave Gerlach said he was the one who dialed 911 and knelt by Barnett’s side, holding her hand while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

"We'd tell her breathe, breathe and then she'd struggle for breath and try to move a little bit. That went on it seemed like forever then the police got there and the officer came over. He was telling her, ‘You’re are going to be alright. Just stay with us. Stay with us,’” Gerlach said.

So far, there’s been no word of any suspects.

A roadside memorial created Wednesday brought together those who say they knew Barnett and those who just felt the need to pay their respect.

“I put five candles down there because there are five people in our family. I thought that would be the thing to do,” neighbor Kelly Day said. “I feel so, so sad and horrible for her family and those who knew her. My heart goes out to them.”
