PITTSBURGH — A pregnant woman was struck and killed by a minivan Wednesday afternoon on the North Side.

Investigators said the accident happened in the Rite Aid parking lot in the 800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue near Brighton Road.

Jodie Guthrie, 30, was taken to the hospital and medics delivered the baby.

The baby is at Children's Hospital in critical condition, officials said.

Channel 11's Pamela Osborne reported an 88-year-old man was driving the vehicle, and hit the gas instead of the brake.

The man's minivan hit and pinned Guthrie against a wall, police said.

The minivan hit the woman just above her belly, they said.

Guthrie was almost nine months pregnant, Osborne reported.

Osborne reported Thursday night that the family is huddled around the baby at the hospital.

Osborne reported the family of the driver said he has dementia.  Last week, he reportedly left his home to go to the store and ended up in Ohio.

Osborne was told police have initiated the process that will prevent the man from getting behind the wheel again.
