None — BRIDGEVILLE, Pa. -- A couple who are set to be married soon lost everything after a fire tore through their apartment complex in Bridgeville early Sunday morning.
The three-story apartment building and a house next to it were destroyed by the fire, which broke out at about 4 a.m. along Baldwin Street.
Mike Godfrey and his fiancée, Susie Craddock, were all set to get married on Saturday. However, the couple lost everything in the blaze, except for Craddock’s wedding gown.
The couple has two children who were not home when the fire started.
Several people have come forward to help the couple, donating everything from clothes to decorations for their wedding.
Mike Godrey said he appreciated everything but wants to make sure all of the other families affected by the fire are taken care of as well.
"We have had so much help and we appreciate everything everyone has done. We couldn’t be more blessed. I can't say it enough," Godfrey said.
"We are getting married. That's all that matters. We're alive," Craddock said.
Several others who lived in the complex made it out safely.
Desiree King lived in the apartment building and said she made it out with nothing except the clothes on her back.
"I woke up, started coughing, smelled smoke and went downstairs," King said. "That's when I saw the fire in my kitchen."
Bridgeville Fire Chief Bill Chilleo said one firefighter was taken to a local hospital to get checked out, but he is OK.
Chilleo said the flames started in a rear corner of the apartment building and spread to the house next to it.
"They think it started in my apartment, but they don't exactly know how yet," King said.
The Allegheny County fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
According to Channel 11's news exchange partners at TribLIVE, a demolition crew will tear down what remains of the apartment building.
