Butler Township officer helps save occupants from fire

BUTLER COUNTY, Pa. — A Butler Township police officer not only saved a house, but several people after a small fire broke out in the living room of an American Avenue home.

An on-duty officer who was cutting across the street saw smoke and heard the alarms coming from the house.

The officer ran inside and put the fire with a fire extinguisher. The officer also helped get two adults and two children, ages 2 and 4, out of the house.

When firefighters arrived on scene the fire had been extinguished, but they helped another person, who had been asleep on the second floor, out of the home.

“The home had working smoke detectors. They went off, they notified everybody,” said George Ban, Butler fire department chief.

Ban said that there is no visible damage outside, but that there was thick smoke throughout the house.

If the home had not had fire detectors, the outcome would have been completely different, according to Ban.

“We averted a tragedy. Smoke detectors do save lives,” said Ban.

All the home’s occupants have made arrangements to stay elsewhere for the night.
