Cam Heyward hates delay in Joey Porter Jr. deal: ‘I wish we’d get done earlier’

PITTSBURGH — This article originally appeared on SteelersNOW.com.

As the Pittsburgh Steelers’ season opener against the Atlanta Falcons draws closer, Joey Porter Jr. still stands without the contract extension he’s been waiting for.

Cam Heyward, a longtime voice in the team’s locker room, discussed the standout cornerback’s situation.

“I’d like for everybody to get paid, and I’d like for everybody to be taken care of,” Heyward said after practice Wednesday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. “I’m not gonna act like I have every answer to a negotiation. As a player, selfishly, I’d like everything to be done so we can focus and just continue to be locked in, but guys gotta get their business done, and that’s part of the game. And you don’t run from that.”

Heyward was asked if such a situation strains the locker room when deals are coming down to the last minute.

“I wish we’d get done earlier. I wish everything was done in February if we could.”
