PITTSBURGH — Community College of Allegheny County faculty members rallied Saturday at the North Side campus as part of ongoing contract negotiations.
Members of the American Federation of Teachers Local 2067 voted Sept. 18 to move forward with a strike authorization vote.
Although a strike isn’t guaranteed, union members can now allow leaders to call a strike if negotiations fail.
During Saturday’s rally, faculty members said the effort is about ensuring a fair future.
“If we want to attract and retain qualified faculty, we have to offer salaries that reflect the value of the people that we are asking to join us,” one speaker said.
The union’s priorities include wages, benefits, working conditions and educational and student services.
Local 2067’s full-time faculty collective bargaining agreement expired at the end of August.
A CCAC spokesperson provided Channel 11 with this statement:
“CCAC remains committed to working through the bargaining process to achieve a new CBA that provides a fair compensation package to all members of our teaching and non-teaching faculty. The college also remains steadfast that any new CBA must also deliver fair value to the college’s students and to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Allegheny County whose tax dollars fund this enterprise.”
Saturday was also the community college’s 60th homecoming anniversary.
