Child flown to a hospital after house fire in Salem Township, neighbor helps others escape

SALEM TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A child was flown to a hospital after a fire in Salem Township.

Westmoreland County dispatchers say emergency crews were called to a house fire on Rt. 819 at around 8:58 p.m.

A mother and her two children were trapped inside the home but were able to escape. Only one of the children needed to be taken to the hospital. Investigators say they were flown to UPMC Mercy Hospital.

The chief of the Forbes Road Fire Department said a neighbor was able to reach the mother and one of the children at the front deck. The neighbor helped both the mother and the child escape from the deck.
