CLAIRTON, Pa. — A partially paralyzed Clairton police officer who was shot in the line of duty last year was the first patient to try out a specially built ATV Wednesday.

Officer James Kuzak has been on a long road to recovery since the shooting just over a year ago.

On Wednesday, he took part in a new program between UPMC and Mins and Meadows in Lawrence County. Kuzak rode a specially built ATV and said it feels just like it did before his injury.

The trial for Emilio Rivera and Marcus Andrejco-Jones, the two men charged in Kuzak’s shooting, was set to begin this week, but has been pushed to the end of July.

“Now, after the injury, it’s nice to see that I can get back to it this fast,” Kuzak said. “We’ll see how it goes. I’m going to take it slow at first and venture into something a little bit more.”
