PITTSBURGH — A 5.5-mile stretch of the Parkway West was shut down from Friday night through Monday morning, causing major traffic headaches in Pittsburgh.

For some drivers, it took three hours to get from one end of the closure to the other.

“People are frustrated spending hours trying to get somewhere,” said Rebecca Sohn, a business owner in Carnegie.

PennDOT said that the posted detour should take about 30 minutes without traffic.

“Why PennDOT would close the tunnels down on a weekend when there’s a home ball game and a play in town that’s been sold out … I don’t know the thinking,” said Barry McElroy, of Washington.

Steve Cowan, press officer at PennDOT, said that it is impossible to find a weekend in Pittsburgh without a big game, concert, or race.

To complete the projects, Cowan said that they just have to choose a weekend and give people as much notice as possible.

The Parkway West inbound will be open by 6 a.m. Monday.
