RED STONE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — On Tuesday, a couple told Channel 11's Joe Holden about a bear encounter.
Megan and Eric Shumar were driving National Pike in Red Stone Township when they said they were stopped in their tracks by something that looked like a big, black dog.
"It turned around at me, and I saw its big head. It was outrageous. I couldn't believe it," said Eric Shumar.
The Shumars said a couple hundred pound bear was trotting across the roadway.
The couple pulled over to get a closer look.
"I stayed in the truck. It let me take a picture. I was surprised he let me take a picture," said Megan Shumar.
Eric Shumar said he followed the bear around a house and into a cemetery, something wildlife experts recommend you not do.
"He didn't seem mean. He was just a friendly bear," Eric Shumar said.
Wildlife experts said bear sightings are not unusual this time of year. Local police said a den is in that area.
