East Busway to remain closed through weekend because of nearby landslide

PITTSBURGH — Part of Pittsburgh’s Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway will be closed through the weekend because of a landslide.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit closed the busway around 8 p.m. Friday when debris from an active landslide on the above hillside began falling. Material has not reached the busway, but PRT decided to close the impacted section out of an abundance of caution for the safety of riders and employees.

On Saturday, PRT engineers and a third-party engineering consultant have been assessing the stability of the hillside. PRT says some rockfall activity continues, and incoming rain may increase the risk of further debris.

PRT says the consultant will conduct a detailed analysis to model potential rockfall behavior. The results will help determine when the busway can reopen.

Buses are currently entering and exiting the busway at 26th Street in the Strip District, about a mile away from the regular Downtown access point at Grant Street and Liberty Avenue.
