MONROEVILLE, Pa. — Authorities said a man was airlifted to UPMC Mercy Hospital in critical condition after he was rescued from under an asphalt roller in Monroeville late Friday morning.
Officials at the scene told Channel 11’s Renee Kaminski that the hydraulic hose on the roller broke. When it did, it sent the machine jerking forward.
The man was able to remain on the roller, steering it off the road and away from everyone else.
Authorities said he was talking and conscious as emergency crews worked to free him and eventually transport him to Mercy.
The vehicle rolled about 150 before it crashed and the man fell on his stomach and became trapped, police said.
He has severe head trauma and a lot of blood loss, officials said.
The unidentified man works for Suit-Kote as a roller operator, officials said.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and his family,” Brian Renne, a spokesperson for Suit-Kote, said.
