WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. has commented on the new security upgrades made to Kennywood since a shooting there in the fall.

Zappala expressed optimism about the upgrades, just around a month after he said the park was not safe.

The comments come after four teenagers were stopped from trying to climb over a fence and enter the park illegally on the opening day of the season. Police say they were caught by a new artificial intelligence security system.

Zappala said he is impressed by the work he has seen so far and is impressed by how the park has managed to accomplish what it has given its size.

“You’ve got to cover 100 acres of ground. You can put 20 to 25,000 people in that park. That’s a lot. That’s a lot of ground,” said Zappala.

He also considered the people behind the security system to be reliable.

“I think more importantly, I like the guys are putting it together. That’s peer-to-peer stuff. You know, they’re all experts in security,” said Zappala.

After the incident over the weekend, Kennywood said its security system worked the way it is supposed to.

All of the teens will be banned from the park.
