HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A homeowner is calling for additional safety measures after a dump truck crashed through the basement wall of her home along Mount Royal Boulevard in Hampton Township Sunday afternoon.
Emily Schnupp said she was on the third floor with her dog and cat when the crash happened around 1:30 p.m.
“There was a massive sound of an explosion, and then when I felt the house shake, I was like, ‘I think somebody ran into the house,’” Schnupp said.
She quickly grabbed her pets and ran outside.
“I threw on a robe and grabbed my dog and cat and ran out of the house,” she said.
The truck left a massive hole in the side of the home.
Schnupp said the crash destroyed part of the lower-level living area, damaged a gas line outside and destroyed two air-conditioning units.
Paramedics took the driver to a nearby hospital.
Crews worked Sunday to board up the hole.
Schnupp said she will have to stay elsewhere while the damage is repaired, but she does not know when she will return home.
She believes speeding contributed to the crash and said drivers routinely travel too fast along that stretch of Mount Royal Boulevard.
“People fly around both those corners up there,” Schnupp said. “We hear wheels screeching all the time.”
Schnupp said she wants safety improvements along the road, suggesting a guardrail, fence or speed bumps to help protect her home and others nearby.
“Now I have to deal with rebuilding everything, deal with what I lost, and it shouldn’t have to come to that,” Schnupp said. “Things should’ve been taken care of before this even happened.”
Authorities have not announced what caused the crash.
