Elderly men forced out of Jeannette home infested with thousands of cockroaches

None — JEANNETTE, Pa. -- City leaders condemned a Jeannette house Friday morning after learning that elderly people were living in filth there.

Channel 11 News was there when authorities went to the home on Columbia Avenue about 9 a.m. on Friday.

Crews said the residents weren’t home when they got there, but inside, they found roaches and bugs everywhere.

Darrell Bearden, 52, lives in the house with his best friend, 80-year-old Bob, and said he doesn’t think anything is wrong with the home.

“I take care of him and he takes care of me,” Bearden said. “We have a bug problem, yes, but that’s all we have.”

According to police, the house is infested with thousands of cockroaches.

“They just crawl all over you, but they don’t bite,” Bearden said. “That’s the only major problem we have here.”

Councilman Mark Levander said he wants to help the elderly homeowners.

“It was an unfortunate situation and something needed to be done,” Levander said. “Someone needed to step in and help these gentlemen out.”

Jeannette Police and the Department of Aging forced the two men out of the home Friday. Bearden was taken to a shelter and Bob was taken to a local hospital.

Charles Schade, the building's landlord, will be cited because this is the second time one of his properties has been investigated for having cockroach infestation and unsafe living conditions.
