PITTSBURGH — Larrimor’s, a family-owned designer clothing store in downtown Pittsburgh, announced Thursday that it is going out of business after 87 years of operation.
A going-out-of-business sale will begin Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 9 a.m. at the store’s location at 249 Fifth Ave. in One PNC Plaza. The sale will continue until all inventory is sold.
The store will close permanently no later than the end of December.
Harry Slesinger and Larry Morris opened Larrimor’s in 1939 in a 1,000-square-foot storefront in the Union Trust Building. The retailer operated in the Union Trust Building for more than 70 years before moving to One PNC Plaza in 2010. In 2006, Esquire magazine named the third-generation store a “Best of Class” retailer, making it the only Pittsburgh store to earn the recognition.
Tom Michael, co-owner of Larrimor’s, spoke about the decision to close after nearly nine decades in business.
“For 87 years, Larrimor’s has been incredibly fortunate to be part of the lives of so many people in Pittsburgh and beyond,” Michael said. “This decision marks the end of an important chapter for our family, but we are incredibly grateful for the customers, employees, designers and community members who have made Larrimor’s what it is today. We hope this final sale gives our customers an opportunity to find something special while also giving us a chance to say thank you.”
Discounts at the closing sale will range from 20% to 75% off the entire store, with no exclusions. The markdown applies to men’s suits, sport coats, dress shirts, sportswear and shoes, as well as women’s clothing, outerwear, handbags and fine jewelry. Featured designers include Zegna, Canali, Isaia, Peter Millar, Magnanni, L’Agence, Akris, Eileen Fisher, Staud and Hammitt. Newly arriving fall and winter merchandise will go directly onto the sales floor and all store fixtures will be available for purchase. All sales are final.
Lisa Slesinger, co-owner of Larrimor’s, noted the store’s connection with local residents over the years.
“We have been honored to help dress so many Pittsburgh families, often three generations of the same family,” Slesinger said. “The selection will never be better than it is on opening day and we hope our customers will come find something they will enjoy for years to come.”
The store will be closed Sunday through Tuesday, Nov. 1-3, while inventory is marked down. Validated parking for shoppers will be available at the three PNC Plaza, Oliver and K&L Gates Center garages.
