DONEGAL, Pa. — Emergency crews were called to a fatal accident on Route 31 in Westmoreland County early Wednesday.

Investigators said the accident happened about 3 a.m. in Donegal Township.

Police said 22-year-old Ralph Skovira’s car crossed the center line, went off the road, hit a tree and caught fire.

Authorities said Skovira’s friends and fellow firefighters were the first ones on the scene.

Skovira, who was a volunteer firefighter, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Robert Fry said Skivora became a firefighter when he was 16.

“He was always smiling. He was a big part of our family,” Fry said.

Route 31 was closed two miles west of the turnpike for most of Wednesday morning.
