LISBON, Ohio — A father and two boys died Sunday during an attempted water rescue at Little Beaver Creek in Lisbon, Ohio, officials said.

According to police, Carson Bonar, 14, Garrett Vadino, 10, and Todd Vadino, 44, were kayaking prior to the incident. The boys were washing mud off their shoes when Garrett got caught in the current.

"The 14-year-old boy tried to help him out which then he in turn got into trouble,” Lisbon Police Chief Michael Abraham said.

Todd then jumped in to try to save both of the boys, but all three drowned, Abraham said.

Rescuers were able to pull Carson from the water and performed CPR, but he later died at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Todd’s body was pulled from the river Sunday night, while Garrett’s body was recovered early Monday morning, police said.

Abraham said life jackets were found of the shore of the creek, but he believes the group took them off after they finished kayaking.

"Just be aware of the water that you're in. Be aware. Moving water is tough. Just be aware of what power it has,” Abraham said.

Todd was a high school shop teacher, and his son, Garrett, was headed into fifth grade.

West Branch School District officials released a statement about Carson, saying he was an honor roll student throughout his eighth grade year.
