MAHONING TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Following the discovery of hundreds of pounds of unrefrigerated, raw meat and fish in a food truck from the Pittsburgh area in August, the Food and Drug Administration has gotten involved.

Back in August, Mahoning Township police pulled over an NYWP Enterprise truck and found that the refrigerator onboard wasn’t working. Officers found 150 pounds of raw meat and fish inside the truck, which was on its way to deliver the food in Ohio.

Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture inspectors went to the McKees Rocks company’s warehouse two days later and tested three of their other trucks, which they found to be working properly.

Records from the Allegheny County Health Department showed that there were more inspections at NYWP Enterprise in October. At that point, the FDA got involved.

The FDA found several more violations, including food contaminated with rodent droppings, food cross-contamination, mice in a box of raw beef and birds and droppings found in the facility.

The FDA issued a letter to the wholesale food distributor, warning that if the company doesn’t correct the violations, it will result in “seizure and/or injunction against the manufacturers and distributors of volatile products.”

The FDA did acknowledge that NYWP Enterprise sent the agency a letter in response to the inspection, saying, in part, that it has “aggressively addressed the deviations noted above...to ensure safe storage and handling of all products in the facility."

However, the FDA said it wants to see documentation from the company on how it’s correcting the problems.

Attempts on several occasions to reach NYWP Enterprise for comment about the violations were not returned.

The FDA said the company has 15 days to comply.
