PITTSBURGH — More than 5,000 people turned out for Saturday's Pittsburgh Pirates 5K Home Run on the city's North Shore.

The 5K run kicked off on Federal Street and ended inside PNC Park, where runners crossed home plate to complete the race. The fifth annual event also included the Chick-fil-A One Mile Family Fun Run.

"It's a great course, and it goes along the Allegheny River, along the River Walk, back up. And the best part of it is that you come into the ballpark, and you get to go around the warning track and finish at home plate," said Pirates President Frank Coonelly.

Competitive runners were able to run the 5K individually or take part in a team challenge, where teams of four runners competed against other teams based on average overall time.

Top male and female individual runners, as well as top male, female and co-ed teams, will be recognized on the field at PNC Park prior to the Pirates vs. Cubs game Tuesday.

A post-race party was held on Federal Street.

In 2014, the event raised nearly $137,000 to help support Pirates Charities' local community and charitable initiatives.
