Suspect in custody after walking up frozen Allegheny River for hours

A suspect is in custody after a man spent hours walking up the frozen Allegheny River.

Pittsburgh Police said officers were called to the 7100 block of Highland Drive for reports of a person trespassing at the former VA site at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

When they arrived, the man reportedly ran away. Officers caught up to him on Allegheny River Boulevard. Police said he ignored repeated commands and went onto the ice.

Channel 11 last spotted the man walking under the Hulton Bridge at around 3:30 p.m.

River Rescue teams and Pittsburgh medics were called to the scene to help.

The man was taken into custody at 4 p.m. after exiting the ice near the 4600 block of Freeport Road in Harmar Township, police say.

Medics took him to a hospital in stable condition.

He is expected to be charged.
