First, it was free antibiotics. Then, free diabetes medications. Now, Giant Eagle is offering free prenatal vitamins.

Channel 11 News consumer reporter Robin Taylor said it's a great deal for pregnant and nursing women -- the most commonly prescribed prenatal vitamins are now free with a prescription at the pharmacy.

These are not over-the-counter prenatal vitamins; they're vitamins prescribed by a doctor.

Giant Eagle is offering either a 30- or 90-day supply of Prenatal Plus, Advanced Natalcare and Natalcare Pic for free with a valid prescription.

Taking prenatal vitamins is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent birth defects, according to many health experts.

Giant Eagle said this is part of an overall strategy to focus on health and wellness.

"All customers need is a valid prescription for one of the most commonly prescribed prenatal vitamins, bring it to the Giant Eagle pharmacy, and we'll gladly fill it," said Rob Borella, senior director of Giant Eagle marketing and corporate communications.

Giant Eagle estimates its free antibiotics and free diabetes medications have saved customers more than $40 million.

Giant Eagle is also holding wellness weekends in October with free flu shots for children and health screenings for adults. In addition, Giant Eagle is offering bonus fuel perks for adults getting a flu shot.
