Girl, 5, found wandering in Beechview & mother discovered sleeping, 11 Investigates sources say

PITTSBURGH — A 5-year-old girl was found wandering in Pittsburgh’s Beechview neighborhood Sunday, 11 Investigates sources say.

Chief Investigator Rick Earle confirmed the girl was found with no shoes on along Broadway Avenue at about 6:23 p.m.

According to sources, a 911 caller claimed the girl knocked on her door, and when she opened it, the girl just walked inside.

It’s not clear how long the child was outside.

Around 8:30 p.m., police found the child’s mother sleeping at her home on Broadway Avenue, sources say. She allegedly told police that she’d just worked a double shift and wasn’t aware that the child had left.

Police arrested the mother and took her to the Allegheny County Jail, sources say.

The child was taken to the Zone 6 police station. Medics later took her to UPMC Children’s Hospital for evaluation. We’re told the Office of Children, Youth and Families has been called.
