The Homer-Center School District is delaying the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
In an announcement on its website, the district says it will be contracting with professional cleaners to address elevated levels of mold spores in some elementary classrooms.
No concerns were found in the junior-senior high school, according to the announcement.
Warm and humid weather this summer contributed to the “challenging conditions” in parts of the elementary building, Superintendent Ralph J. Cecere Jr. said in a letter Saturday.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the District is working with a professional environmental cleaning and remediation company to inspect the affected areas thoroughly and address the Aspergillus spores that have developed,” Cecere said. “This additional time will allow the necessary work to be completed and will help ensure that our classrooms are appropriately cleaned and prepared to welcome students and staff.”
The new start date is tentatively set for Sept. 1.
