BADEN, Pa. — A gas leak caused evacuations in Baden, Beaver County on Monday morning.
“I didn’t even get outside, and I heard, ‘shhhh….’” said Elizabeth Chaousis, who lives in the neighborhood. “Then I smoked my cigarette inside of the house, and I came out and got the whiff of the gas.”
She started calling her other neighbors, some of whom have children who live on the street. People from all six houses on McKee Avenue were evacuated by police and firefighters as a precaution.
Columbia Gas officials said they recently identified a “minor non-hazardous leak” in the neighborhood and started digging. Over the weekend, however, Columbia says the side of the trench fell, damaging a pipe, which was under repair. It became an immediate issue once residents heard the hissing noise and called 911. They say gas did not migrate to any of the houses.
“I love my whole street. We’re all pretty tight, and there’s kids here. You don’t want anything bad to happen to kids,” Chaousis said.
Repairs to the gas line were scheduled to be done by noon on monday.
